Paid Undergraduate Internship

The HtF Team directs a paid research internship program for undergraduate students who are:

  • The first in their family to go to college, and/or

  • Would be the first in their family to go to graduate school or medical school

This program was founded in 2021 as funded by the MGH Psychiatry Department. It has been expanded since then, with current interns being funded by the MGH Psychiatry Department and the MGH Office for Belonging and Engagement.

Each year, we open a call for applications in April.  Prior to opening this call for applications, the HtF team identifies faculty members within the MGH Psychiatry Department who are able to host an intern in their research lab.  As part of the application, applicants indicate their research interest areas, and select faculty members they would ideally like to work with. We expect to be able to fund three interns each academic year, with internships starting June 1 or September 1, depending on the intern’s preference. We ask that interns protect time to engage in the internship for a minimum of 9 months.

This is a paid internship (10 hours per week; payment is via a monthly stipend of $735 per month). It can be done fully remotely (depending on the mentor applicants select).  Career development activities are part of the paid work time.  Required activities during the internship include:

  • Weekly journal clubs - designed to enhance the experience of reading research paper

  • Monthly career development seminars – guest speakers sharing their career path and lessons learned

If you would not be able to do an unpaid research internship due to financial constraints, we particularly encourage you to apply for this program.
